Examining the clarity of diamond engagement rings

If you’re looking to propose in the near future, you’ve likely been learning about the quality factors when it comes to finding the perfect diamond engagement ring in Hatton Garden. Within the 4C’s framework, the clarity is an important aspect that influences the rarity and value of a diamond. The GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) defines clarity as “a gemstone’s relative freedom from inclusions and blemishes”.

When speaking to Hatton Garden’s jewellers, you’ll be keen to learn about the clarity of the diamond engagement rings on offer in London. There are eleven clarity classifications in the GIA grading system, these are:

• Flawless

• Internally Flawless

• VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included)

• VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)

• VS1 (Very Slightly Included)

• VS2 (Very Slightly Included)

• SI1 (Slightly Included)

• SI2 (Slightly Included)

• I1 (Included)

• I2 (Included)

• I3 (Included)

For many customers, it is important that a diamond’s clarity characteristics cannot be seen with the naked eye. Where you choose to position yourself on the above scale is a personal choice, but do bear in mind that certain cuts of diamond are less forgiving when it comes to the clarity of a stone.

The emerald cut for example is referred to as a step-cut. Due to its large open table, it can be easier to spot any inclusions and/or blemishes with the naked eye. Rennie & Co therefore recommends a minimum of a VS2 clarity for this cut of diamond. If you’re looking for a round brilliant cut diamond engagement ring in Hatton Garden, you may wish to drop down to a nice SI1. It is important that each diamond is assessed on an individual basis as two stones of the same clarity grade can vary quite drastically in appearance.

To assess clarity, graders examine the diamond under 10X magnification. Rennie & Co invite their customers to view their diamond of choice under 10X magnification with a loupe, allowing you to identify exactly where the diamond’s clarity characteristics are. To us this is very important, as we believe that for such an important purchase, all factors must be considered to ensure that your diamond is of an exceptional quality. Our Hatton Garden jewellers will answer any questions that you may have along the way.
