A quality mount is essential when viewing engagement rings

The engagement ring is without doubt the most touching and sentimental gift that your partner will receive in their lifetime. Whether chosen alone or together as a couple, this is a piece that they will treasure and love for an eternity. When selecting from the many engagement rings available in London, the first thing that will catch your eye will be the sparkle of the diamond. Natural diamonds are truly wonderful and a universal grading system known as the 4Cs helps customers to differentiate one stone from another.

However, have you placed much thought about the mount? (The metal part of the ring). The mount is often overlooked during the search process and undeservedly so. A structurally weak mount is likely to affect the longevity of the piece which could in turn result in the loss of a diamond. Metals commonly used in engagement rings displayed in London showrooms are platinum and 18ct white gold. What is the difference you may ask? Platinum is a naturally white metal whereas 18ct white gold must be rhodium plated in order to ensure the white colour is maintained. If a ring is re-plated on an annual basis, it must be pre-polished beforehand which will remove gold on each occasion. Therefore, over time you can end up quite literally polishing your ring away. In terms of strength, once again it has to be said that platinum is the superior metal so, if your budget allows, platinum is preferable.

Whatever the choice of metal, the craftsmanship involved in producing your ring is by far the most significant factor. At first glance it can be difficult to notice large differences between the qualities of engagement ring mounts, however upon closer inspection it is very clear. Mass manufactured mounts may appear lacking in finesse and are often hurriedly assembled and are no match for the handcrafted alternative. This is a ring to be worn for life therefore choose the right piece first time round.
