How your claw set engagement ring is set in Hatton Garden

Hatton Garden jewellers are world renowned for their beautiful craftsmanship. One of the most intriguing aspects of the handcrafting of beautiful engagement rings from London is the diamond setting. In this article, we review the methodology of a claw setting.

The first thing that a diamond setter will do is to place the unset ring into a set of jeweller’s clamps. This will hold the ring firmly in place. The setter will then sit the loose diamond on top of the claws, which will help to determine whether they need to be closed in or opened out. If the stone falls straight into the setting then the claws would need to be closed in but if the stone sits on top and looks to cover the claws then they would need to be opened out. The ideal is for the diamond to sit on top with the edge of the claws in view. Whilst every diamond is different, the procedure remains the same regardless of if you bought your beautiful engagement ring in Hatton Garden or elsewhere in the world, however it has to be said that some of London’s setters are considered the best in the world. A common problem particularly with some mass produced rings is the removal of too much metal, leaving the claws that retain your expensive diamond weak. It really does pay to have the best craftsmen carry out this job.

Once the Hatton Garden jeweller has adjusted the claws to suit the stone, it is time to choose a cutting tool which is inserted into a pendant drill. The tool is used to cut a fine groove to the inside of each of the claws, whether this be four, six or eight claws. Once completed, the setter will place the diamond into the ring and gently push over each claw to secure the stone in place. The claws are then further pushed over to add to its security. Once this has been completed, a jeweller’s file is used to reduce the excess height and to shape the remaining claws into a round shape to complement the diamond. All engagement rings from London’s jeweller quarter will have been worked on in this way.

Your Hatton Garden jeweller will then remove the initial drill and replace it with the final tool, which possesses a rounded concave head with a very fine cutting blade inside. This is placed over each claw and as the drill is rotated it rounds the claws off and also removes any sharp edges. The final step is to polish the completed ring to give that eye catching sparkle!

It is incredible to think that your engagement ring from Hatton Garden has been worked on this very way by a talented jeweller! If you are searching for the perfect engagement ring in London’s jewellery quarter, visit Rennie & Co the established Hatton Garden jewellers.
